How it works

Car insurance rates are traditionally based on demographics—things like age, marital status, and ZIP code. But Root is a different kind of insurance company. We base rates primarily on how you drive, not who you are. It’s the fair way to price auto insurance.

State requirements for car insurance in North Dakota

What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in North Dakota?

To legally operate a vehicle in North Dakota, you must carry Liability insurance,  Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, and Personal Injury Protection. If you are found driving without these, you may be charged with a misdemeanor, face fines, and have your license suspended.

Liability coverage

Liability coverage helps to pay for property damage or bodily injuries that occur from a car accident you cause. It does not cover harm to you or your family members (that’s what Personal Injury Protection and Medical Pay coverages are for). It also doesn’t cover your vehicle, but Collision and Comprehensive coverages do—these additional coverages can help you avoid major expenses in the event of an accident.

Minimum required Liability coverage in North Dakota:

  • $25,000 Bodily Injury (per person)

  • $50,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)

  • $25,000 Property Damage

You can select higher limits if you’d like more coverage.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM)

Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist coverages are both required coverages. They pay for the damages, losses, and injuries you suffer if you’re in an accident caused by a driver who doesn’t have car insurance. You’re also covered if you’re in an accident with a driver whose car insurance is insufficient or is considered underinsured.

Minimum required Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage in North Dakota:

  • $25,000 Bodily Injury (per person)

  • $50,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)

You can always choose higher limits if you want more coverage.

Personal Injury Protection

North Dakota also requires drivers to have Personal Injury Protection (PIP). This is sometimes called “no-fault” car insurance. PIP coverage will help pay for your medical bills after a car accident, regardless of who is at fault.Minimum required PIP:

  • $30,000

You can always opt to have more coverage than the state minimum.

What is SR-22 insurance?

SR-22 insurance is a liability document for high-risk insurance policies. It’s proof of responsibility and a guarantee that you’ll be insured for a certain period of time. If you decide to cancel your coverage or it lapses for any reason, your insurance company is required to notify the State Drivers License Division. You can easily request an SR-22 in the Root app.

The average North Dakotan pays $1,229 [1] per year for their auto policy, but many drivers pay a lot more. Bad drivers often drive up prices for good drivers. Root doesn’t insure bad drivers, so Root customers could save up to $900 a year—all while enjoying fair and simple car insurance.
