State requirements for Maryland auto insurance
Liability coverage
Liability coverage helps to pay for property damage or bodily injuries that occur from a car accident you cause. It does not cover harm to you or your family members (that’s what Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection coverages are for) or your vehicle (but Collision and Comprehensive coverages do). These additional coverages can help you avoid serious expenses in the event of a major accident.
Minimum required Liability coverage in MD:
$30,000 Bodily Injury (per person)
$60,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)
$15,000 Property Damage
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage (UM/UIM) will help pay for the damages, losses, and injuries you suffer if you’re in an accident caused by a driver who doesn’t have car insurance. That way, you’re not caught paying for any damages with your own funds. It also covers you if you’re in an accident with a driver in Maryland whose auto insurance insufficient.
Minimum required Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage:
$30,000 Bodily Injury (per person)
$60,000 Bodily Injury (per accident – multiple people injured)
$15,000 Property Damage
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Maryland also requires drivers to have Personal Injury Protection (PIP), also called no-fault car insurance. PIP coverage will help pay for your medical bills after a car accident, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. If you’re involved in a car accident caused by another driver, that driver's Liability insurance is responsible for your medical costs even after your PIP goes into effect. While insurance companies are required to offer this coverage, drivers who meet certain criteria can choose to decline it in writing.
Minimum required Personal Injury Protection coverage:
$2,500
What is the average cost of car insurance in Maryland?
The average driver in Maryland pays $1,467 [1] per year for their car insurance, but many people pay much more—often to make up for their bad-driving counterparts. Root doesn’t insure high-risk drivers, so Root customers could save up to $900 a year.
